This is a vaccine that decreases your risk of getting hepatitis B, a viral infection of the liver.
Hepatitis B is a viral infection of the liver that can cause:
- Fever
- Headaches
- Weakness
- Tiredness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
- Dark urine
- Liver failure
- Liver scarring (cirrhosis) and liver cancer after prolonged infection
The hepatitis B vaccine helps protect you from an infection with the hepatitis B virus. It will not protect you from other liver infections (other types of hepatitis).
The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends this vaccine for adults with certain risk factors that put them at higher risk for contracting hepatitis B. Talk to your healthcare provider to see if you have any of these risk factors.
- If you have a moderate to severe illness, check with your healthcare provider before you receive the vaccine.
- You should not receive the vaccine at all if you have a known allergy to any of the components of the vaccine (such as baker's yeast).
- Adolescents who were not vaccinated should receive the hepatitis B vaccine series as soon as possible.
