This test uses sound waves to create images of your uterus and unborn baby when you are less than 14 weeks into your pregnancy.

An obstetric ultrasound uses sound waves to create detailed images of your uterus and unborn baby. This test is for a woman who is less than 14 weeks into her pregnancy. The images can include the:

  • Position of the placenta and unborn baby
  • Amount of amniotic fluid
  • Status of the heart and other organs

Your healthcare provider may order this ultrasound to:

  • Check on your unborn baby's health
  • Determine the position of the placenta
  • Determine how many babies you are carrying
  • Estimate your due date

Here are some things you should know before having an ultrasound.

  • You will be asked to drink water before the test. Having a full bladder will help make the uterus and unborn baby more visible.
  • Your healthcare provider can tell you other things you need to do to prepare.
  • You may want to wear a loose two-piece outfit, so you can remove just the bottom for the exam.
  • They are usually painless.
  • The exam usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Usually, only one ultrasound is needed for each pregnancy.

During the test, a technician will move a probe over your abdomen.

  • The probe will be covered with a clear gel.
  • The gel helps send the sound waves to the computer.

The costs for this test include the charge for the test (facility charge) and physician charges (for performing or interpreting the test). You may get separate bills from the facility and the physician's office.

What should I ask my healthcare provider before having this test?

  • Is there any special preparation for the test? (If so, get clear instructions on what you need to do.)
  • Why are you ordering this test? Will the test results change how we take care of my pregnancy? If not, do I need the test?
