Ultrasound - Pregnancy

This test uses sound waves to create detailed images of your uterus and unborn baby.

This test uses sound waves to create detailed images of your uterus and unborn baby.

An obstetric ultrasound uses sound waves to create detailed images of your uterus and unborn baby. Your healthcare provider may order this test for a number of reasons, including checking on your baby's health, checking on the position of the placenta, determining how many babies you are carrying and estimating your due date.

Your healthcare provider can tell you how to prepare.

  • You may want to wear a loose two-piece outfit so you can remove just the bottom for the exam.
  • You will be asked to drink water before the test. Having a full bladder will help make the uterus and fetus more visible.
  • The exam usually takes 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Usually, only one ultrasound is needed for each pregnancy.
  • The costs for this test include the charge for the test (facility charge) and physician charges (for performing or interpreting the test). You may get separate bills from the facility and the physician's office.

What should I ask my healthcare provider before having this test?

  • Is there any special preparation for the test? (If so, get clear instructions on what you need to do.)
  • Why are you ordering this test? Will the test results change my treatment plan? If not, why do I need the test?
