This test is done to check the level of C-reactive protein (CRP) in your blood.

  • CRP is a marker of inflammation somewhere in the body. It is done as part of a work-up for certain connective tissues diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis.
  • One should not confuse this with another test: high sensitivity CRP, which can be used to measure a person's risk for developing heart disease. The two tests have similar names, but are distinct and ordered for different reasons.

In an adult, the blood sample is taken by placing a needle in a vein in the arm.

What should I ask my healthcare provider before having this test?

  • Is there any special preparation for the test? (If so, get clear instructions on what you need to do.)
  • What is the reason for the test? Will the test results change my treatment plan? If not, do I need the test?
