This test measures the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in the blood.
This test, by measuring the level of thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in your blood, can determine how well your thyroid gland is functioning. When your thyroid gland is not working properly, your pituitary gland will increase the amount of TSH it makes. The TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to produce more thyroid hormones (T3 and T4).
In an adult, the blood sample is taken by placing a needle in a vein in the arm. In a newborn, the sample is taken by pricking the baby's heel.
What should I ask my healthcare provider before having this test?
